Tarptent Double Rainbow Backpacking Tent Review

If you’ve been looking for the kind of super reliable and easy to setup ultralight shelter, then you need to look no further than the Tarptent Double Rainbow. Designed from the ground up to be the fastest setup around as well as incredibly durable and reliable in three seasons, this is the kind of lightweight tent you’ll feel comfortable pitching in your go-bag and heading out for a new adventure.

Tarptent Double Rainbow Review — First Impressions

The first and immediate impression I had when looking at the Tarptent Double Rainbow was “Is this it?”. I’ve been around a lot of ultralight shelters before, but this one had to the take the cake for sheer simplicity and small pack away size. I had read a handful or so of tent reviews talking about the small size of this ultralight, but even still I wasn’t prepared for just how little room this shelter was going to take up in my pack.

Getting things spread out a bit on the ground caused me even more confusion – not only did this tiny package unpack into a decent sized shelter suitable for two people to sleep “cozily”, but there was enough headroom in this little guy to sit up straight in. Combine that with the near instant setup and I was more than intrigued.

Amazingly lightweight, this is a great tent to have even when the wind is really blowing

One of the things that every backpacker worries about when they are using an ultralight is how they are going to stand up to the elements. No matter how thoroughly we plan out trips, Mother Nature has a way of changing the game on us midstream and we need to know without a shadow of a doubt that our shelter is going to keep us safe and comfortable.

And clocking in at just 2lbs 10oz, this outdoor tent – the Tarptent Double Rainbow – does more than that. Designed from the ground up to offer you the kind of comfort and livability you would expect from a larger tent, this ultralight will give you the peace of mind in knowing that you’re going to be shielded from the elements. And different design elements – not the least of which is the single pole construction we’ll talk about in a moment – all play a major role in making sure that the wind won’t take your outdoor tent in the middle of the night! The profile of this shelter is low slung and aerodynamic enough to make sure you never have to worry about waking up in Oz.

Comfortable and reliable, you can have the Tarptent Double Rainbow unpacked and pitched in record speed thanks to a single pole setup

Another major concern for people who are backpacking, especially alone, is the ease in which they are able to pitch their shelter – and the Tarptent Double Rainbow makes setup a breeze. Going from packed and stowed to completely and totally setup inside of just two minutes – yes, two minutes – you’ll be good to go for a night’s sleep in record time.

This is thanks to the simple design of the single pole construction and the general layout of the shelter itself. There are a lot of top tent reviews out there that talk about speed of setup being a major factor in determining the which product is the best tent, and you would be hard pressed to find anything easier or faster to setup than the Tarptent Double Rainbow.

Designed for ultralight excursions and specifically for three season use, there are a couple of drawbacks to the Tarptent Double Rainbow

While I would love nothing more than to tell you in this tent review that this is the be all end all in the shelter world, I cannot in good conscience do that. While this is easily one of the best tent setups I’ve ever encountered in all my years of backpacking, the fact of the matter is that there are some cons that you need to be aware of.

All ultralights suffer from waterproofing problems to some degree, and this tent is no different. While there are clear and easy to follow instructions on how to waterproof the main seams, it ends up being a clunky and awkward process to do in real life – and you need to do it twice to get any reliable results.

The other major problem that most people will find – and something that a couple of other tent reviews have pointed out – is that even though the Tarptent Double Rainbow has the word “tarp” right in the name, it doesn’t have the same toting and carrying functions that camping with a tarp would. A lot of people love to roll their tools into a tarp and use it as a transporter to save even more space in their pack – you will not be doing that with the Tarptent Double Rainbow.

When it comes to ultralight tents, you know there are some tradeoffs you’ll be making when you invest in one. You would be hard pressed to find any solution on the marketplace that offered you the kind of serious advantages as the Tarptent Double Rainbow while mitigating the downsides – this is the kind of tent you can rely on for all of your adventures, so long as you understand the shortcomings ahead of time.
