Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter Avalanche Beacon

A smart tracker purposefully built to find people lost in the woods or in an avalanche, the power of the Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter cannot be understated. One of the most reliable machines on the market (especially for the price), this is the beacon of choice for a number of folks all over the world.

Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter Avalanche Beacon Review

There is literally no feeling in the world quite as frightening as finding yourself lost in the middle of unfamiliar wilderness – especially when you’re in avalanche country. The anxiety that sets in, the panic that spreads all across your body, and the fear of staying lost for who knows how long is very real and very tangible. And while most outdoorsmen and outdoors women never anticipate actually getting lost and truly deep down in their heart of hearts believe that they will never be involved in an avalanche, we’ve all heard stories or know someone who spent hours, maybe days (or maybe never even returned) from a trip out the deep snow..

The worst part of all of this is the simple fact that modern technology provides us with all the tools we need to never have this happen again. And one of the most high tech and reliable systems to do just that is the Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter.

Pieps DSP Review — First Impressions

The very first triple antenna beacon that ever hit the marketplace, the Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter has been designed and developed from the ground up to offer you the kind of peace of mind and reliability you need to trek into the unknown. This is the kind tool that you can rely on to push the boundaries without risking your life, always knowing that you have a safety valve in your back pocket.

Before we go any further, I just want to make it clear that this tool in no way should give you a “get out of jail free card”. This is an effective and super reliable relief beacon, but should never be used as a lifeline unless absolutely necessary. Just because you have one in your pack doesn’t mean you should feel stressed to use it.

Relatively bare-bones, but offering incredible reliability, this is still based off of the very first triple antenna beacon system in the world. And with only minor innovations added to the platform, this is a pretty stripped-down and relatively basic beacon locating platform. You should understand right away that there are some serious limitations to the equipment, and that this is a last chance desperation Hail Mary that you should count on when you need it most but never hope to use.

Super range

The thing that’s most impressive about the Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter is the simple fact that it has incredible range. Designed to use higher quality crystals to boost range and assist in location, this is the kind of platform you can rely on when you’re deep, deep in the undiscovered wilderness.

With one of the most effective flagging systems and allowing for multiple victim burials, this is a contractor you need to, when things get rough and murky. As good of an avalanche burial detector as there are in the world, this gives you the best chance of being found quickly, safely, and while you’re still alive. If you’re doing any unexplored skiing, snowboarding, or other snow sports in avalanche prone landscapes, you’re truly playing with fire and trying to cheat death if you don’t have one of the strapped to your vest or somewhere on your person.

Use it like a fish finder

While not exactly mimicking the same tool that professional anglers used to locate fish, the fish finder mode on the Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter has been touted as one of the most impressive of all. When you hit the fish finder button the unit will work to locate people within a given area while also bouncing back their estimated location. There is no concern of shadowbox or other major issues like some other finders struggle with, and this is as close to a reliable and foolproof platform as you’ll find on the market.

There is a bit of bad news

As stated above, this beacon system should only be used when you absolutely, positively need. The major problem is that if you had in the opposite direction and move out of range, there is no indicator that you are going the wrong way. You have to use your own intuition to turn around and back yourself in, and while some of the newer models have pulse protection to overcome this, the Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter does not.
